One evening in late summer, Tom and Sallie explored the paved paths through the woods near their new house. The paths wound and wound, and soon Tom and Sallie were lost. They looked at Google Maps on their smartphones, but that didn’t help. They wandered and wandered, not seeing anything familiar. It was dusk. Sallie pointed toward a path through the woods—a path that was not paved. Let’s try that, she said. The path dipped. Tom and Sallie walked through a muddy stretch. The path went up a short hill. At the top, indistinct against the darkening sky, they saw their parents. Sallie ran to her father. Tom ran to his mother. Tom and Sallie wondered how their parents had known to find them on that part of the path. They wondered if their parents really were there. Their mother and father, when Tom and Sallie hugged them, felt like ghosts.
